From the exhibition of ancient arts and craft to consuming only traditional delicacies, expressing oneself only in the mother tongue and dressing only traditionally, the maiden edition of the Michi Ebeng festival that took place in the Guneku Palace last April is still like it was yesterday. In March 2024 the second edition will come up for Kwem Dance Groups.

In the picturesque village of Guneku, the Meta people of Mbengwi, Cameroon, have embarked on a journey to rediscover their cultural roots. After a hiatus of six years due to the challenges posed by armed conflict in the region, the community decided it was time to revive their rich heritage. Last April, they embraced tradition with open arms during the "Michi Ebeng" cultural festival, an event that marked the rekindling of memories and the preservation of cultural practices. Prof Njoh Oliver Mecuda, a key figure in this cultural resurgence, emphasized the importance of reviving their traditions. "For the past 6 years, our culture has been in the cold, so now we are trying to revive it and start from somewhere," he shared. "We need to uphold the culture to pass it on to our generation." Buoyed by the success of the inaugural festival, the Meta people are gearing up for the 2nd edition. Scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Guneku Palace, this promises to be an even more enchanting spectacle. The renowned Kwem Dance Groups will take center stage, adding a thrilling competitive element to the celebration.
Mbakwa Bernard, the Fon's representative, highlighted the significance of reconnecting with their traditions, stating, "We decided and felt it necessary for us to revisit our abandoned meals and be natural."
