On Friday 2 September 2022 the Oko hydroelectric plant at Fringyeng, in Upper Guneku, was burned down. The plant had been built by Kasi Rhex Ndeh, applying knowledge he had acquired from his studies in Uganda, and funded by Dr. Kasi Elvis. It supplied electricity to the Fringyeng quarter.
Six days later, on 8 September 2022, the Fon of Guneku wrote to his subjects of Fringyeng in a letter of two pages.
What the letter says
He thanked the people of Fringyeng first — for their devotion and their continuous commitment to the development of Guneku in general and of Fringyeng in particular — and set out what had been realised for the quarter: the Fringyeng clinic, the school, the community hall, and road maintenance.
On the fire itself he wrote that it was “a great loss for the people of Fringyeng and Guneku in general”, and that “the palace condemns these actions in the strongest terms possible.”
He warned those who would disrupt the newly established healthcare centre in Fringyeng: “There’s no justification for interrupting or destroying any development project especially those designed to benefit the community.”
The way he proposed
“Guneku has come of age as a civilised village and we should follow proper channels to table our concerns to the palace to address them rather than embark on self destructive actions that will benefit no one but only relegate our progress many years behind.”
He announced a meeting with the subjects of Fringyeng, held by video call, to open a direct line between the quarter and the Palace on matters of development.
